![]() ![]() It's the latest example of gamers rising up against NFTs-blockchain-based tokens representing ownership of a digital item. Last week, game maker Ubisoft met vocal backlash from gamers upon announcing its first three in-game NFTs for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. 2: Heart of Chernobyl, sequel to first-person shooter game S.T.A.L.K.E.R., has cancelled its in-game NFT plans after receiving negative criticism on social media, largely from the gaming community. Video game publishers have been trying to incorporate NFTs into their titles. As gaming companies each announce their stance on blockchain gaming and NFTs, it will be interesting to see whether the polarized gaming community’s vitriol has any long-term effects on the industry. Some mine Ethereum for fun on their gaming PCs while others own NFTs themselves. That said, there are plenty of gamers who are into cryptocurrency and NFTs. 2’s game devs must have taken all the angry replies on Twitter seriously, it’s not yet clear if anti-NFT gamers represent the majority of gamers, or if they’re just a small (but vocal and angry) minority. Ubisoft has invested in blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands and has doubled down on its NFTs, despite criticism from anti-NFT video game journalists and gamers threatening to cancel subscriptions and stop buying the company’s games. Unlike GSC, billion-dollar companies like Ubisoft can push forward on NFT projects with less concern. “Based on the feedback we received, we’ve made a decision to cancel anything NFT-related in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. GSC attempted to clarify the reason for its NFTs.īut GSC ultimately chose to kill the idea altogether. If GSC sold NFTs for lots of money, the reasoning went, it would be able to continue funding game development to make the sequel better. The small developer also revealed its rationale, citing a need to fund its game. 2 is not a blockchain game, NFT metahumans would be optional buy-ins, and the NFTs would have no impact on gameplay. The Ukrainian company then tweeted out some clarifications: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Many blockchains use much less energy than electricity-intensive Bitcoin, but some of the most adamantly anti-NFT gamers have painted all digital tokens as environmentally destructive. It also declined to name the blockchain it would use-which would have helped substantiate its claim that the project would be environmentally-conscious. GSC provided little explanation as to why it was making NFTs, leading many gamers to believe the company was jumping on to a fad. GSC’s NFT pitch may have been bungled due to a lack of education for fans. While some gamers supported the idea, others did not and expressed their frustration by creating memes. ![]() The NFTs were set to be sold through Dmarket, a third-party marketplace where players can buy and sell in-game items. Buyers would then have their name or alias tied to that in-game character, giving them a cameo as a “bartender, comrade or enemy,” according to the announcement website. It started by revealing its most ambitious NFTs: three NPCs, or non-playable characters, dubbed “metahumans,” would be purchasable using blockchain technology. 2 developer GSC Game World announced it was including NFTs in its sequel. And in November, chat app Discord came under immediate fire from its core users after it teased a possible Metamask Ethereum wallet integration that has since been scrapped. ![]()

![]() Again, Daylight Saving Time was used to conserve energy and fuel during wartime. In the Netherlands, the Germans advanced the local time by one hour and 40 minutes, changing the time in Amsterdam from “Dutch Time” to Central European Summer Time (CEST). The practice was implemented again during World War II by the Germans, who spread it to many countries under Nazi occupation, including Denmark and Poland. ![]() However, most returned back to standard time after the war, with Daylight Saving Time relegated to a wartime phenomenon. Seeing sense in the idea, other countries across Europe began to adopt the same practice. This was two years into World War I, and the logic was to reduce the use of artificial lighting, to save fuel and energy for the war effort. The first countries to utilise Daylight Saving Time were Germany and Austria, who both implemented the policy on April 30, 1916. In 1908, residents of Porto Arthur in Ontario decided to change their clocks to make better use of the daylight hours during spring and summer. Various other regions in Canada soon followed their example, starting with Winnipeg and Brandon in 1916. It was a region of Canada that was the first to actually implement Daylight Saving Time. Although there was interest in all of these ideas, they were never followed through. Later, in 1895, New Zealand scientist George Vernon Hudson proposed changing the clocks by two hours every spring, to give him more daylight hours to collect and examine insects. In 1907 British builder William Willett suggested implementing a clock shift to save energy. In 1784, following the advent of the pendulum clock and other more accurate timekeeping devices, the polymath Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea of moving waking hours to align better with daylight hours. In a satirical letter to The Journal of Paris, he suggested people should wake up earlier in summer to save money on candles and lamp oil, after observing city-dwellers sleeping late into the morning, and missing out on daytime hours. The concept of setting the clock forward and back to reflect the fluctuations of the seasons and daylight has a long history, stretching all the way to the Romans, who used water to measure time, adjusting their scales throughout the year according to solar movements. The origins of Daylight Saving Time (DST) If you've ever wondered why we change the clocks twice a year - and if we'll carry on doing so forevermore - here's a brief explainer. It's been a practice on and off in Germany and other countries around the world for over 100 years, but to some expats it comes as a bit of a surprise: every year at the end of March and October, people set their clocks forward and back one hour, to implement what's known as Daylight Saving Time. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The player joins either the Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist forces, and works with the rest of their team to secure different objectives on the map, or simply destroy the enemy team. The marketer began inscribing the word Coke on its bottles in 1941, according to “The Cola Wars,” a sign of greater guardedness over its image after trademark disputes. Coke resisted responding directly - doing so would admit Pepsi was a legitimate threat - though its awareness of the competition behind the scenes slowly grew. Pepsi for years fought tooth and nail to carve out an edge against Coke. Of course, a rivalry doesn’t amount to much if it’s purely one-sided. “I can’t think of a more memorable ‘brand activation’ than the Super Bowl halftime show this year.” “Pepsi advertising, yes, but over the last few years they’ve dropped bombs in pop culture in ways that Coke ,” he added. “Good advertising in this rivalry is like bringing your sharpest knife to a gunfight,” Phillips said. Even if it doesn’t, the brand left things off on a strong note, drawing raves for a Super Bowl LVI showcase that brought together Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Dr. ![]() While the NFL deal is set to expire in 2022, Pepsi could still renew the agreement, as reported in CNBC. The stage has captured the attention of tens of millions of viewers during TV’s most-watched event for years, shoring up Pepsi’s reputation for showmanship. The company for the past decade has sponsored the Super Bowl halftime show as part of an NFL deal reportedly valued at over $2 billion. While radio ads and jingles are no longer a game-changer in marketing, this strategy laid the groundwork for Pepsi’s identity in important ways that reverberate today, especially through the close association with music. That’s a difficult needle to thread as the war for consumer attention continues to evolve, jumping to nascent channels like gaming and the metaverse where brands are enacting another land grab. An antagonistic rivalry might not be conducive to devising planet-saving solutions on this front, and even more lighthearted sparring - enabled by social media - carries a potentially unwanted edge in an increasingly divided society.įor Coke and Pepsi, the future could require a mindset that’s more hand-in-hand than head-to-head. As much as marketers were pressured for their role in the littering crisis decades ago, they now must contend with questions around sustainability, an area where food and beverage firms produce a massive amount of waste. Public frustrations extend to more substantive business practices as well. It’s hard to put on a compelling duel in the marketing arena if the stands are empty. Today’s consumers have made it clear they don’t much like advertising, while flocking to channels where brand messages are easier to avoid. The ad landscape looks markedly different now than it did in the “Mad Men” heyday or the outsized aesthetics of the ‘80s. Louis and Harvey Yazijian write in their 1980 book “The Cola Wars,” an in-depth account of the formation of the two soft drink empires and some of their most iconic battlegrounds. “As two of the prime consumer products in modern civilization, Coke and Pepsi have come to epitomize perhaps the central feature of all advertising, which is to provide the forum for placing social values and attitudes on a plane with material ones - be they goods, services, or money,” J.C. Similarly, Coke and Pepsi’s marketing spats have often mirrored broader social change and disruption, reflecting the cutthroat tactics of early packaged goods industrial expansion, the counterculture of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and in today’s world, the concept of brand purpose, where a company pursues a deeper set of values than peddling goods. With a relationship that predates the 20th century, Coke and Pepsi have played a pivotal role in shaping the contours of modern advertising, helping define what it means to be a brand. “Are you Coke or Pepsi?” is a question that frequently appears on personality quizzes, underpinning the significance ascribed to beverages that, in form and function, are largely similar. Even people who have sworn off soda may hold an opinion on which label they align with.
